NEED: High Frequency Power supply
Hi all
I am interested in doing some research that would require a power supply
that could do the following:
Input 110 v ac, 60 Hz
Output: constant current up to about 10 A
Output frequency: up to several hundred MHz (preferable frequency
adjustable from KHz to MHz)
Does a piece of equipment like this even exist?
If so, I have a very limited budget, say up to about $500. Is that
realistic?

Doug,
This looks like a device for measuring PDN impedance at high excitations over a
broad frequency range.
We looked into this and I think there are at least two solutions. We did
experiment with the first one.
1) Use a broadband amplifier like from Amplifier research. A 100W amp can
provide about 2A into 50 Ohm. Now the PDN impedance is low, so you can use a
16:1 transformer to increase the current. Such a transformer can be made from
ferrite and coax cable. For the low frequency, below like 1 MHz you can use
many audio amplifiers or you can use a power OP-AMP from APEX.
2) If you place a power Mosfet (RF FET) between Vdd plane and ground another
self created VDD (about 3V higher than your VDD), then you can drive this power
mosfet and switch at any frequency you like. The MOSFET if used in saturation
acts as a voltage controlled current source. This solution should allow you to
inject noise into VDD at rather large current levels. We tested this in
simulation. This method is within your budget, the other is far beyond.

Hi Doug,
Several years ago I had purchased a Power Supply Simulator from Flexstar
Technology of Fremont with similar capability. The cost was about $5K and the
output current was less than 5A. However I returned it to them because it was
not able to supply steady voltage at higher frequencies due to the shunt effect
of input capacitors used in the equipment under test. This is a real issue
with high-frequency power supplies. If someone is able to provide such a power
supply then it will be prohibitively expensive.
