User can browse questions, answers, news and announcements, etc., without an SIPI Exchange account. You can search the forum as well.
Only registered user can ask questions. It is recommended that the user search the forum before asking, to see whether the question has been addressed before. The body of the question allows user to add texts, change fonts, upload pictures, add hyperlink, etc. User shall “tag” the question with key words that describe the topic of the question. User is expected to identify at least one tags for each question raised. (TBD: user will be able to suggest a tag if he/she cannot identify one from the tag library. The administrator will add the tag manually to the library) User can edit his/her own question afterwards.
Only registered user can answer questions.
Registered user can vote up/down a question, as well as an answer. Answers with highest votes will raise to the top in the displayed answers. User cannot vote his/her own questions or answers.
Owner of the question can select the best answer for the pool of listed answers
Please use the “Post News” tab to make announcements, such as new course, conference info, job opening, etc. Administrator can move the post to news/announcement as it fits.
A tag is the key word that is related to the question asked. Multiple tags can be used for the same question. Tags are used by SIPI_Exchange to group/organize relevant questions. User can click a tag to bring up all the discussions related to this specific tag. The description of each tag can only be edited by administrator. User can send comments to administrator for any suggestions/feedback for description of individual tag. User can suggest new tags if they cannot find an appropriate tag for the question being asked.
Each user will need to provide a valid email address as the account name. An email will be sent to the email account to reset password, if user forgets the password, and tries to recover the account.
Reputation is a rough indicator of your contribution to the forum, and to some degree represents how much other people in the forum trusts you. User earns reputation by posting good questions or answers: uses earns +5 reputation if question is voted up, and +10 reputation if answer is vote up. If your answer is picked as “best answer” by question owner, +20 reputation will be awarded. User loses -2 reputation when his/her question or answer is voted down. The person who votes down question or answer will also lose -1 reputation as well. Every user earns +10 reputation upon signing up. Additional +10 reputation is awarded if the profile is completed. Lowest reputation for any single user is 1. (no zero or negative reputation) The administrator reserve the right to enhance or amend the reputation scheme to avoid potential abuse.
There are two types of “search” supported. The user can search the tags to identify discussions related to a particular topic. Alternatively, the user can search the entire forum (on the top right corner of the webpage) to identify any post that contain the exact phrase being searched.
All the SI-List posts starting from June-2001 have been imported to this forum, and on-going SI-List posts will be imported to this forum as well.
SIPI_Exchange registered User can “claim” the question that is imported from SI_List, if he is the original owner of the question. This will change the owner of the question from “SI_List” to his/her current SIPI_Exchange account. The user needs to have certain reputation to have this capability. Please be careful not to claim other people’s question, since the process is not reversible.
